Blood sugar (glucose) is your body’s main source of energy.
It fuels cells and organs, and when balanced, supports energy, mood, and long-term health.
Chronic blood glucose roller coasters can lead to a range of health issues, including fatigue, mood swings, and more severe conditions like organ failure or being diagnosed with other autoimmune conditions.
Most of us with blood sugar disorders already know that insulin helps move glucose from the blood into our cells to be used as energy immediately or stored for later use.
Managing blood sugar levels is much more complex than simply “taking enough insulin”.
It’s a daily balancing act that includes:
- Timing of meals
- Physical activity
- Lowering stress
- Sleep quality
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Nutritional choices
- Gut health (yes, really!)
When any of these are “off,” it can lead to insulin resistance or impaired insulin production, which make blood sugars harder to calm down (6).
- Why Reducing Insulin Resistance Matters for Better Blood Sugars
Insulin resistance means your cells aren’t responding well to insulin, requiring more and more of it to manage blood glucose.
Over time, this can lead to type 2 diabetes or complicate existing type 1 diabetes management.
I think it’s important to note that cardiovascular disease is the #1 leading cause of death not only in the United States, but globally (4).
If you talk to any cardiologist, you’ll likely hear them tell you any A1c above 5.0% is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease risk (5).
This fact should emphasize vital blood sugar management needs to be taken.
There are numerous studies showing that healthy, non-diabetics have a fasting blood glucose range between 72 – 85 mg/dL, which is equal to a 4.1 – 4.6% A1Cs (3).
It shouldn’t surprise you that those within this A1c range typically have longer life expectancies.
So, how can you aim for those numbers without burning out?
Enter: Your gut.
The Gut-Blood Sugar Connection
The gut microbiome is a collection of trillions of microbes living in your digestive tract. And they do way more than just digest food.
Recent studies suggest the critical role gut health plays in blood sugar control and type 1 diabetes development (7).
These tiny gut microbes play a pivotal role in various bodily functions, including (8):
- Digestion
- Proper immune response
- Blood sugar control
- Hormonal balance
- Nutrition absorption
- And more!
Studies show that a healthy gut microbiome can influence how the body processes glucose and responds to insulin (9).
All of this commonly leads to more insulin sensitivity and healthier blood sugars, not to mention the effort is commonly easier, too!
On the flip side, an unhealthy gut (aka dysbiosis) can lead to increased inflammation, insulin resistance, and even trigger or worsen autoimmune conditions like type 1 diabetes.
Beneficial gut bacteria help break down and ferment dietary fibers into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have been found to improve insulin sensitivity, blood glucose levels, and reduce inflammation (10).
How Gut Health Affects Insulin Sensitivity (and Improves Blood Sugars)
One way gut health affects insulin sensitivity is through the production of SCFAs by the beneficial gut bacteria (11).
SCFAs, such as butyrate, acetate, and propionate, are produced during the fermentation of dietary fibers that cannot be digested.
These SCFAs end up in the colon where most of the gut microbes should be hanging out, which can improve insulin sensitivity through various mechanisms:
- Enhanced Glucose Uptake
SCFAs can increase glucose intake by the muscle cells, improving their responsiveness to insulin (12).
This improved muscular activity now also leads to:
- the reduction of fat build-up and
- increases fat breakdown
What if you’re already physically active?
Insulin sensitivity commonly spikes up, in the best way possible, as well!
At this point, you’ll likely need to focus on reducing insulin levels because low blood sugars are a common result high metabolic efficiency.
- Reduced Glucose Production in the Liver
SCFAs can inhibit the liver’s production of glucose (aka gluconeogenesis), helping to limit blood glucose spikes (13).
In other words, this is just another mechanism behind less insulin resistance and better insulin sensitivity.
- Proper Gut Barrier Function
The gut microbiota influences the integrity of the gut barrier, which prevents harmful substances from entering the bloodstream, like gluten and other foreign invaders.
A healthy gut barrier prevents endotoxins, which are produced by harmful bacteria, from triggering inflammation and either causing insulin resistance or making it worse (14).
When gut dysbiosis (an unhealthy imbalance of gut microbes) is present, it’s common for many health dysfunctions to occur, including gut health and SCFAs to be lacking on varying levels.
In addition, dysbiosis can compromise the gut barrier further, leading to a condition known as leaky gut.
Dysbiosis is one big factor further associated with (15, 16, 17):
- insulin resistance
- metabolic disorders
- other chronic illnesses and diseases
- autoimmunity
- type 1 diabetes
- type 2 diabetes
- Better Regulation of Hormones
SCFAs influence the release of hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism (18).
These hormonal changes can indirectly affect insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
But how?
Overeating high-calorie and low-nutrient-dense foods commonly found in highly processed and junk foods, typically leads to higher blood sugars (19).
Higher SCFA intake is associated with reducing this overeating mechanism (20).
Does this mean you can consume SCFAs and still eat crappy food?
You sure can but the results will likely not be in your blood sugar’s favor.

Think of it like being a baseball pitcher with a broken arm, yet you’re still trying to throw with it.
Will this arm ever heal and perform optimally as a result?
Cutting corners like this almost never leads to your desired blood sugar results, so be cautious of this.

Lastly, the gut-blood sugar connection also involves the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication network between the gut and the central nervous system.

And that’s not all.
Certain strains of probiotics have been found to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels in individuals with metabolic disorders.
For example, the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species have been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity by modulating the gut microbiota, reducing inflammation, and producing SCFAs (23).

Soluble fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels by preventing rapid blood glucose spikes and ensuring a steady release of glucose into the bloodstream.
This result is further enabled when we consume these fibers BEFORE any carbs (27).
Specifically, eating carbs last in your meal will reduce blood sugar spike potential if consuming your fibers and proteins first (28).
Because many fiber-rich foods are also moderately high in carbs, I personally supplement with a handful of fibers that will partially solidify in my mouth before swallowing, as previously mentioned.
This has forced me to create my own system of taking these supplements due to its immediate gel-like formation.
This characteristic allows soluble fibers to coat the digestive track, which explains how the glucose spikes are reduced.
Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, adds bulk to the stool and aids in regular bowel movements.
